There’s some discussion among the caravan community as to whether towing covers break the law while you’re on the road, voiding your vehicle insurance in the process.
The answer is a little more convoluted than a simple yes or no.
In this article, we’ll explain what you’ll need to do to avoid getting your collar felt and being slapped with hefty fines.
WHAT ARE THE RULES?
To avoid getting rumbled by the fuzz, your caravan running lights need to be visible at all times AND operable from the inside of your towing vehicle.
How Does That Relate to Towing Covers?
Much like caravanners, all caravans are different; as such, none of the running lights are in the same place.
So, cheap, generic caravan towing covers don’t have allowances, windows, or apertures to allow the lights to shine through.
Some towing cover companies try to circumnavigate these rules by placing pockets of “pop” LEDs that can be switched on before setting off to alert other road users to their presence. Unfortunately, you can’t switch these puppies on and off from your vehicle, so they’re still against the law.
ARE PROTEC COVERS ROAD LEGAL?

What About Your Generic Covers?
We unveiled the Towing Jacket to the public about five years ago, and we’ve been working backwards to pattern as many older vans as possible.
However, there are still some of the “classic” vans we still haven’t had time to measure.
For those caravans, we sell ageneric or “classic”style cover that uses a series of straps and clips to fit it to the van.
In this instance, you’ll need to perform a little DIY to pop a hole in the cover where your lights are and use the equipment, we provide to stick the window in place.
Thus ensuring your freedom for the foreseeable future.
